Central nave

The 15 m long central nave is connected with the side naves by 5 round arches. The piers have a square ground plan. In the clerestory there are three narrow round-arched windows each.

Bell tower

The slender bell tower with a square plan is inserted into the west end of the nave. It has a west gallery. In the upper storey of the tower there are four round-arched twin windows, the central columns of which have a cube capital.

Romanesque choir

In the 15th century the Romanesque choir is rebuilt in late Gothic style. The tower receives a wooden battlements. Ogival windows are inserted in the choir. Remains of wall paintings from this phase have been preserved.

History

1100 Archaeological excavations have shown that around 1100 Hungarian Szekler lived in Gârbova.
1200 The Szeklers living here are resettled in southeastern Transylvania in the Orbai Szekler chair. Saxons are settled in their place.
1200-1300 Construction of the Romanesque arcaded stone basilica. The church consists of a choir, three naves and a west tower with a gallery.
1291 First documented mention of the place under the name of Urbou.
1400-1500 The Romanesque choir is rebuilt in late Gothic style. The tower has a wooden battlements. Pointed windows are used in the chancel. Remnants of wall paintings from this phase have been preserved.
1487 The Counts of Vingard created the Romanian village of "New village" in the area of ​​Gârbova and are trying to tear it away from the royal soil. King Matthias orders the destruction of the village.
1500 Gârbova is a free community of the Miercura Sibiului see, in which 64 families, 4 poor people and a schoolmaster live. Four houses are abandoned.
1500-1510 A new hall church is being built in the village.
1529 During the war for the Hungarian throne, Gârbova was burned down.
1599 The troops of Michael the Brave devastate the region. Gârbova is also suffering badly. Pastor and dean Georg Alexi Vízaknai is killed. The number of families in the region drops from 400 to 11.
1689 The villages Apoldu de Sus, Gârbova and Dobârca are heavily burdened by taxes. There is a danger that the villagers will leave their villages.
1705 Gârbova is plundered by imperial troops.
1870 The roof of the church burns down.
1876 The ring wall is removed.
